The story

Marie Stopes International, Summer 2007

The aim
Marie Stopes International wanted to win presenter endorsement as the leading sexual health expert and raise awareness of emergency contraception for holidays.
The message
Emergency contraception can be used up to 72 hours after unprotected sex, including when a condom splits or a pill is missed, but it should not replace a reliable regular method.
The angle
Research suggested sunshine makes us more likely to have a holiday romance, with 46% of men and 53% of women saying they have had one. Stations were pitched emergency contraception as something to pack, given a seasonal rise in abortions each autumn.
The result
104 items of coverage (54 interviews and 50 on-air competitions) reaching 82.3 million, including BBC Radio Wales, Kerrang! 105.2, BBC West Midlands, BBC Radio Solent.

About Summer

Summer is a major broadcast moment built around the school summer holidays, days out, travel, hot weather and outdoor living. In England and Wales schools usually break up in late July, while in Scotland and Northern Ireland they break up in late June. For brands and charities with something useful to say, it gives radio and TV producers a timely reason to book an interview.
