The campaigns
Glaucoma UK, Glaucoma Awareness Week
The aim
Glaucoma UK wanted to encourage people to talk to their families about glaucoma and get an eye test every two years.
The message
Glaucoma runs in families, and early detection through a regular eye test is the only way to prevent glaucoma sight loss. Glaucoma UK wants to end preventable glaucoma sight loss.
The angle
For Glaucoma Awareness Week, a reminder that glaucoma affects over 700,000 people in the UK, is often symptomless until 40% of peripheral vision is lost, and makes you at least four times more likely to develop it if a close blood relative has it.
On air
A spokesperson from Glaucoma UK, alongside a father and son who both live with glaucoma
The result
9 items of coverage reaching 2.6 million, including Greatest Hits Radio Bucks, Beds & Herts.
Glaucoma UK wanted to get people booking an eye test every two years, because glaucoma is often symptomless and early detection prevents sight loss.
The message
Over 700,000 people in the UK have glaucoma and half do not know it. The only way to know is an eye test, and early diagnosis means a better outcome.
The angle
The number of people in the UK living with glaucoma is expected to rise by 44% between 2015 and 2035. The disease is often symptomless and can cause irreversible sight loss, but a routine eye test can spot the early signs so it can be treated.
On air
A leading glaucoma specialist
The result
6 items of coverage reaching 2.7 million, including TalkTV, Notts TV, BBC Radio Newcastle.
Glaucoma Awareness Week is run by the UK charity Glaucoma UK. It encourages people to learn about glaucoma and have regular eye tests, as around half of the estimated 1.1 million people in the UK with the condition do not know they have it. It gives producers a reason to cover the subject, and brands with a credible spokesperson a way onto radio and TV.
