Case study · Blue Monday

Jet2holidays

January gets a lot of people down, and new research put a number on it: over a quarter (26%) of UK adults felt down in the dumps, blaming cold wet weather (59%) and darker nights (50%). The good news was that 48% used Blue Monday to do something positive, and 21% booked a holiday to cheer themselves up. We built Jet2holidays' broadcast PR campaign around that brighter side, putting a psychologist and cognitive behavioural therapist and a representative of Jet2holidays on air across a radio day of interviews. The campaign secured 16 items of radio coverage reaching 3.0 million listeners, including Sky News Radio, BBC Radio WM and Downtown Radio.

About Blue Monday

Blue Monday is the name given to the third Monday in January, promoted as the most depressing day of the year. It began in 2005 as a press release for the travel company Sky Travel and has no scientific basis, but charities now use it to start conversations about mental health. Stations plan their coverage of it in advance, which makes it a strong hook for a broadcast PR campaign.
